E-Zee-P-Zee Whirly Gigs

This is an updated version of my Whirly-gig pictotoot. This method will make two whirly-gigs at a time. No templates or specialty rulers are needed.

For the August block-lotto block, use any bright fabric for the “gigs” and low/volume print or solid fabrics for the background.

To make two (2) 4.5″ whirly gig blocks, you will need.

  • one strip feature fabric – 2.5″ x 13.25″
  • one strip Low-Volume (LV) or Background (BG) fabric – 2.5″ x 13.25″

Stack the strips FACE-UP and cut into rectangles 2.5″ x 3.25″.

Using your long ruler, place the 60 degree angle line on the left side of the stack of rectangles as shown above and slice the stack into two pieces. Select the top coloured fabric and move it to the bottom of the stack. See the photo below. You will have one stack of fabrics with the bright fabric on top and one stack of fabric with the BG fabric on top.

Sew the units together using a 1/4″ seam.

Once all 8 blocks are squared up to 2.5″ square, lay them out in two stacks like this. Sew the squares together using a 1/4″ seam.

Press the seams to one side, or open to reduce bulk. Now position the units as shown below and sew the centre seam.

Press seams to one side or open. The whirly-gig should measure 4.5″. Trim if needed to square up.

and that’s how you make whirly-gigs, 2 at a time, with no templates.

The whirly gigs are SO much more practical than pinwheels! Same impression, but only half the number of seams meeting in the center!
